COVID-19 Side Effects: Sales are down

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is healthy!

Things are a bit busy with SecretBrokerage.com and on the top of that, we’ve moved to our new office. That’s why I couldn’t post for a while. It seems like 2020 is the year we will never forget, for sure. One way or another, COVID-19 has been affecting all of our lives, including aftermarket domain sales.

I was checking some sales on Namebio and I wanted to make a quick comparison about domain sales between 2019 and 2020, based on top 100 highest sales that are reported. Here is what I found:

  • The total USD volume is 11,369,582.00 USD in the first 9 months of 2020. The USD volume of the same period for 2019 was 56,172,409.00 USD (Including 30,000,000.00 USD Voice.com sale). That’s almost a 80% downfall. 57% downfall without Voice.com sale.
  • The average sale for the highest 100 sales reported in first 9 months of 2020 is 113,695.82 USD. The average sale for the same period in 2019 was 561,724.09 USD, including 30,000,000.00 USD Voice.com sale and 264,367.77 USD without Voice.com sale.
  • The highest sale reported in first 9 months in 2019 was Voice.com, sold for 30,000,000.00 USD whereas the highest sale reported in first 9 months in 2020 is Nas.com sold for 720,000.00 USD.
  • There were four 7-figure sales reported in the first 9 months in 2019:Voice.com sold for 30,000,000.00 USD

HealthInsurance.com sold for 8,133,000.00 USD

California.com sold for 3,000,000.00 USD

RX.com sold for 1,000,000.00 USD

  • No 7-figure sales reported in 2020 USD until today.

On the other side, it seems like the number of domains sold (and reported) in 2020 will be likely 10% higher than 2019 based on the reported sales.

I also must note that Uniregistry stopped publishing their sales after they’re acquired by GoDaddy.

We all know that these numbers are just the tip of the iceberg and there’re thousands of private sales. However, that’s all we have for now and it’s certain that domain business is being slow in 2020.

How have you been doing in 2020? Don’t be afraid to share. Remember: Sharing is caring and domain business needs that more than other businesses out there!

  1. I think BrandBucket and SquadHelp are having good sales compared to 2019. Some individual sellers there have experienced a spike in sales numbers in comp with 2019.

  2. 2020 is by far my best year. I think COVID-19 has been good for the domain industry – people are moving their businesses online, or starting new ones.

    1. Great to hear that! Is it USD volume wise or the number of domains wise “the best” for you? BTW, I’ve been hearing the following comments from the people in the domain industry in 2020:

      – 2020 is by far my best year
      – 2020 is by far my worst year
