domain name appraisals - a review of SEDO and Moniker appraisals
I think it’s time to appraise the value of domain name appraisals. Let’s use some recent real world figures here. I received an email inquiry last week on one of my domain names. It went something like this: Hi, would you be interested in selling [name intentionally left out].com? Thanks, [name removed] I did the normal c...

sssshhh….Qbay.com for sale on eBay
Here’s an interesting gem I found today on eBay. QBAY.COM is for sale, current high bid is just over $2000. What’s more interesting than the domain is the mini blog/twitterlike updates that the seller is making within the auction listing. 4 days after he started the auction, he posted this call for help: 4/12/2008 3:22P...

must have tool for domainers - firefox domain lookup extension
I just love this new domainer tool from Richard Kershaw of Quality Nonsense! It’s basically a quick way of looking up domain names from any text you see on a webpage using Firefox. First step is to install the Firefox extension. Then, say you’re reading a breaking news story today about a new tech discovery and you want

my first domain sale of 2008 - we don’t need no stinkin auction :)
The sale closed on my first domain sale of 2008 this week. $3200 from an original $10 purchase. The interesting point about this particular sale is that I had submitted it a previous domaintools.com auction and they passed on it. One thing that is very clear with aftermarket domain name sales is: “Good domain names sell themsel...

domaintools Live Auction Moved Back to January 10th
Jay Westerdal of domaintools.com pre-announced today (as a reply in the comments area of a recent “Top Picks” blog post) that the upcoming domain auction will be pushed back one week: from January 3rd to the new auction closing date of January 10th. This is welcome news to domainers (including myself) who have domains who...

shutterfly vs skutterfly - a case of reverse hijacking with a happy ending?
On another forum I visit, one of the members posted about a cease and desist order they received from a company representing shutterfly.com In the letter, it claimed that the owner of skutterfly.com was trying to captialize on the trademark of shutterfly.com when they registered the skutterfly.com domain name. They quoted the ACPA (A...

event.com sells for $165,000
I think this might have been the steal of the auction. Event.com is a very strong domain name. Of course events.com is stronger, but there’s a lot of potential for event.com in the right hands. It has a social bookmarking/event listing site written all over it.

poker.in sells for $60.000
In today’s DomainRountable live domain name auction, poker.in just closed at $60,000. Not sure if this is the largest .in domain name sale to date, but “poker” is a very strong keyword to own as a ccTLD.

live domain name auction going on now
Although my domain names didn’t make it in the auction (grumble grumble), it’s still very interesting to watch which domains get no bids and which are getting several. how to select the right wiki software
Recently, I found myself in the market for a wiki. To be honest, I wasn’t completely sold on the idea that wikis actually worked. The more I read and researched, I found that a wiki, when done right, can be a powerful source for distributing information. It is a great way to build an information resource, and

dotster named in cybersquatting lawsuit
It looks like Dotster has been named in a typo-squatting lawsuit filed by Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman. The high end retail companies claim that dotster abused its status as an official icann registrar by mass registering names that are common typographical errors of federally registered trademarks. Sample domain names referenc...

Dell vs Dell - trademarks gone wild
Recently The Register published a news story (and another) about a man (Paul Dell) who is being sued by the computer manufacturer (Dell Computers) for acts of “parasitism and of unfair competition”. It seems Dell, Inc feels that the Spain based web designer’s domain name (dellwebsites.com) is deliberately infringing...

registering a .sc domain name - a junkies tale
So it turns midnight and what am I thinking of? Registering another domain name! This time it’s a pair of cute little dot sc domains that stuck in my brain (.sc is the ccTLD for the country of Seychelles). Here was the thought process: I was getting ready to send a newsletter for one of my websites and

whois.sc becomes domaintools
In another case of corporate brand murder, the folks at NameIntelligence are changing their whois site from whois.sc to domaintools.com. The reasoning behind the name change seems pretty simple. While whois.sc was short and easy to type, the domaintools.com name helps show that the new site has a whole host of great domain tools. The...
